Rex Stringer

Rex J. Stringer passed away January 12, 2019 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the University Heights Baptist Church in Stillwater, OK. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.

Rex was born July 29, 1925 in Mineral Springs, Arkansas to Rex H. and Bessie Stringer.

Rex entered the U.S. Army on September 15, 1943. He received his basic training at Camp Fannin in Tyler, TX. From there he went to the Southwest Pacific Theater where he joined the 41st Infantry Division. He served as a combat medic with the 41st in operations in Biak, Palawan, and Mindanao Islands. Rex received the following awards and honors, Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Bronze Arrowhead, Combat Medic Badge, Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. On January 30, 1946 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. After his discharge Rex returned to Sweetwater, OK to complete his senior year of high school. He then attended Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University) in September 1946. Rex graduated from Oklahoma A&M in January 1950 and began his retail career with T.G.&Y. Stores on February 1, 1950 in Elk City, OK.

He met a young lady, Ina Rush, in Elk City and they were married January 5, 1951, a loving relationship that lasted these 68 years.

During Rex’s 33 ½ years of service with T.G.&Y. his ability, hard work, dedication, and conscientious effort resulted in advancement from Assistant Store Manager, to Store Manager, to District Supervisor, to District Manager, and his final position of Divisional Vice President of the Oklahoma Division.

Rex was one of many who was instrumental in helping develop T.G.&Y. Stores from a small variety store chain to one of the nations top retail chains during the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. He was tremendously respected throughout the company for his merchandising and leadership skills.
